Take Steps to Cultivate Joy

During BrainHealth Week, the Empowering Women Through Brain Health conference brought together top national leaders to discuss women's brain health research.

How can you be intentional about happiness?

Perspective-taking enables humans to focus on the value of experiences and new potential. Habits that encourage you to reframe negative thinking and practice self-compassion can enhance outlook and well-being.

SCIENCE SAYS:

What an experience means to your brain is all about your perspective. Identifying steps that are likely to help you learn and move forward in a positive direction ignites higher-level thinking and innovation, and can enhance feelings of joy and your ability to thrive in life.

WAYS TO BEGIN:

  • Nurture self awareness — take time to connect with your feelings and your sense of purpose, through practices that encourage you to reflect on your feelings and express them in healthy ways.
  • Practice self-care — pay attention to your vital needs, like healthy diet, sleep schedule, work-life balance, technology use, and relationships.
  • Be present — practice habits that encourage you to make mindfulness a habit through experiences that grow your feelings of connection to your personal values, community and life's purpose.
  • Make gratitude a habit — make time to reframe disappointment and negative thinking, and instead focus on feeling thankful for the silver linings, a practice shown to boost feelings of well-being.
