How do goals shape your brain function?

Setting realistic goals can strengthen your sense of purpose and strengthen the brain’s frontal networks.

SCIENCE SAYS:

Goal-oriented thinking engages multiple parts of the brain and can even rewire how they communicate with one another. The process also increases dopamine levels, lifting your mood and motivating continued progress. This is the feeling you have when powering through a project to meet a deadline.

WAYS TO BEGIN:

  • Start breaking down big goals into smaller goals and achievable steps.
  • Connect to others. Let yourself learn from the experiences of other people.
  • Keep asking questions. Stay fluid as you evaluate both your progress and process.
  • Identify an important, high-level goal to work toward over a few months.
