Rewire Habit Loops

How can you rewire your habitual tech use?

You can change negative tech habits, even ones on autopilot, by intentionally repeating new behaviors and then rewarding yourself. Replace the old habit with something brain-healthy, instead of just removing it.

Science Says:

The brain you have is a brain you've built, and you can build a new one. Neuroplasticity means repeated behaviors strengthen connections, and the brain's reward system reinforces what feels good. Pairing a new habit with a rewarding experience helps it stick.

Ways to Begin:

  • Pick one habit to change first, like not grabbing your phone while waiting.
  • Decide on a replacement, such as looking around, stretching, or chatting.
  • Start with 5 to 10 minutes and gradually increase.
  • Build in a cue, like phone away at dinner every night.
  • Notice and enjoy the reward of the new behavior.
  • Expect it to feel hard at first, and keep going.
