Puja K. Parekh, PhD – Assistant Professor, Department of Neuroscience, UT Dallas

About the Talk

Animal models can provide valuable insight into how the brain processes information to inform goal-directed actions, decision-making and task disengagement under healthy and adverse conditions such as exposure to chronic stress, a risk factor for the development of neuropsychiatric conditions. Dr. Parekh will highlight recent work which combines behavioral measurements with in vivo neurophysiological recordings to identify circuit mechanisms of effortful motivation and the effects of stress. The goal of these studies is to identify mechanisms to enhance therapeutic development for stress-related disorders. Frontiers of BrainHealth is a hybrid speaker series. By registering for the season, you get a link to virtual talks as well as recordings. If you are interested in attending any talks in person, you can confirm in-person attendance when we send a reminder email a few days prior to each talk.

Speaker Biography

Puja K. Parekh received her PhD in neurobiology from the University of Pittsburgh where she characterized how circadian gene expression impacts synaptic transmission and mood and reward-related behavior. As a postdoctoral fellow at Weill Cornell Medicine, she evaluated the effects of stress and antidepressants on motivated behavior and the prefrontal cortex. She joined UTD as an assistant professor in the Department of Neuroscience in 2024 and is supported by funding from NIMH and BBRF.
