Switch on Your De-Stress Superpower

Center for BrainHealth

What steps help optimize brain chemistry?

Focusing on your breath control is often the first step in diffusing feelings of stress.

SCIENCE SAYS:

Stress triggers your brain's production of noradrenaline (norepinephrine). While this neurotransmitter is essential to your fight or flight response, too much can disrupt brain functions – but just 30 seconds of long, slow breathing can lower your noradrenaline and reduce feelings of stress.

WAYS TO BEGIN:

  • Listen to your body's stress response and pause to focus on breathing.
  • When a conversation starts to get heated, seek out common ground.
  • Reframe negativity. Find a silver lining and activate your possibility thinking.
  • Zero in on achievable goals, and reward yourself when you conquer them.
