Brain Injury and Risk of Dementia
Millions of people experience concussions and other forms of brain injury each year, and the impact on cognitive health can last a lifetime. Emerging research reveals connections between concussion, repetitive head trauma and the risk of developing dementia later in life. This presentation explores diagnosis, prognosis, and long-term outcomes following brain injury, including concussion, repetitive head hits, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Dr. Cullum is professor of psychiatry, neurology, and neurological surgery at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. He holds the Pam Blumenthal Distinguished Professorship in Clinical Psychology and serves as vice chair for psychology in the Department of Psychiatry. He is the senior neuropsychologist in the Peter O’Donnell Brain Institute at UT Southwestern and scientific director for the Texas Alzheimer’s Research and Care Consortium (TARCC). His primary research interests include: clinical neuropsychology, cognitive test development, dementia and memory disorders, telemedicine applications in neuropsychology, and traumatic brain injury and sports concussion.
He completed his PhD in Clinical Psychology at The University of Texas at Austin, followed by internship and postdoctoral residency in clinical neuropsychology at UCSD and the San Diego VA and is a fellow and past-president of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, the Society for Clinical Neuropsychology (APA Division 40), and the Sports Neuropsychology Society. Board-certified in clinical neuropsychology, Dr. Cullum is also involved in research, education, administration and clinical service. His research includes short- and long-term outcomes of concussion, risk factors and differential diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, cognitive assessment, and telehealth applications of neuropsychology.
