Faster Is Better: The Neural Basis of Cognitive Enhancement from Speed Training

Speakers
Henry Mahncke, PhD – CEO, Posit Science

About the Talk

Cognitive training based on speed of processing has been shown to improve cognitive function and real-world performance in multiple large scale randomized controlled trials. Dr. Mahncke discusses the ideas behind training speed from perspectives of cognitive science and neuroscience, and brain imaging results that show how speed training changes the brain, including new results documenting plastic changes in neuromodulatory systems. Speaker Biography

Dr. Henry Mahncke joined Posit Science at its inception in 2003, where he led the first large-scale clinical trials of a publicly available cognitive training program. In this talk, he shares outcomes from an NIH-funded study providing the the first confirmation in humans of an intervention that can upregulate the production of key brain chemicals, even months after engaging in training. Evidence suggests the success of brain training in slowing cognitive decline may depend on the type of game and how it affects certain neurotransmitters in the brain. Dr. Mahncke earned his PhD in neuroscience at UC San Francisco, where he studied with Posit Science Founder and Distinguished BrainHealth Collaborator Michael Merzenich, PhD.
