Some common misperceptions and incorrect assumptions about TBI and PTSD among warriors are pervasive and must be changed. We must eliminate the stigma and rapidly expand effective treatment offerings to those who need them most.

In this op-ed, Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman, chief director of Center for BrainHealth, addresses the unique brain health needs of our nations warfighters, including the signature health issues of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Her reflections carry the hope that increased understanding of the human brain will continue to advance brain health for warriors like retired U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Jake Schick, who was severely wounded while conducting a combat mission in Iraq in 2004.
