Charisma, a social coaching program developed by the Center for BrainHealth, uses generative AI and gaming technology to create realistic virtual environments, helping individuals improve social skills with the guidance of a coach — and now it’s scaling up with AWS.
Overview
In early 2024, Center for BrainHealth began expanding Charisma™ Virtual Social Coaching through a partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). Clinician Kathleen Shaffer describes the program as a way for people to grow and learn to be themselves while connecting with others. She often works with individuals navigating life changes that may impact social skills and sees firsthand the broad positive impact created by Charisma coaching.

“Social rules shift, and it is easy to feel alone. ... Charisma helps make these transitions easier, but as we’ve uncovered over the years, it’s also helping people looking to sharpen their job interview skills or improve customer service interactions.”
– Kathleen Shaffer, CCC-SLP, clinician and coach, Center for BrainHealth
Charisma began transitioning to a cloud-based platform when BrainHealth's Aaron Tate, director of emerging technology, began to explore AWS's pixel streaming capabilities at the 2019 Game Developers Conference. This move enabled the program to streamline its resources and grow into a more accessible, web-based resource.
“”
“Our lead software dev jumped in, uploaded our packages, and showed me what Charisma would look like using AWS. We were blown away how much smoother it was than our home-grown pixel streaming,”
– Aaron Tate, director of emerging technology, Center for BrainHealth
The easy-to-use platform developed by Tate's team offers seamless access to Charisma and the capacity to scale with population size. These updates even make coaching better according to Tate, reducing "friction for start-up and the frustration coaches might experience when managing multiple pieces of software.” He sees AWS streaming technology as a gamechanger in creating an accessible platform, allowing the 2024 evolution of Charisma to operate as a one-click game launcher via a web browser, streamlining client access from more devices.Read the full article in the Dallas Innovates
