How can diet strengthen your brain health?

A well-rounded diet protects your whole body and reduces risk factors associated with cognitive decline.

SCIENCE SAYS:

While no food is a magical brain health elixir, whole foods rich in nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants help strengthen blood vessels and functions throughout the body, including both your heart and your brain.

WAYS TO BEGIN:

  • Try a food log. Take pictures or notes to track what you eat and then make choices to improve your daily diet.
  • Look for nutritional gaps. Explore ways to fill gaps and enrich your daily diet, keeping in mind that what's good for the heart is also good for the brain.
  • Remember: heart-healthy = brain-healthy. Cut back on sugars and saturated fats. Seek out leafy greens, berries, nuts and healthy fats, including plant-based proteins and fatty fish with omega-3s.
  • Ask an expert. Consult a nutritional specialist to make sure your dietary intake is meeting your daily needs.
